Eating Right for Mental Health

Written by: Anisha Sharma, Activities Coordinator of FMHO

Are you sitting at home craving some Taco Bell? Chick Fil A? Pizza Hut? You want to eat some hearty food, but instead are stuck at home during this quarantine, snacking on chips and cookies. During times of stress, one is more likely to binge eat on processed food, which tends to be high in fats, sugars, and salt. Eating like this daily can cause extreme harm to both the physical and mental health of their body.

The World Health Organization has urged that in order to keep your immune system strong during this time, it’s really important to steer clear of processed food and make wiser choices. These choices can include picking an apple over a cookie or even adding an egg to your easy cook ramen.

Here are some key tips from the World Health Organization itself:

  1. Prioritize fresh Ingredients

  2. Prepare Home Cooked Meals

  3. Be Aware of Portion Sizes

  4. Limit Salt, Sugar, and Fat Intake

  5. Follow safe food handling practices

  6. Stay Hydrated

  7. Avoid Alcohol

It’s important to eat healthy during this time. What you put in your body affects your state of mind which can then affect your immune system. There are great sources out on the internet for healthy recipes like this blog:
